All clubs of Dhaka get equal voting rights in BCB election

DHAKA, July 19, 2022 (NNB/BSS)-All of the clubs of Dhaka finally got the equal voting rights in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections as the cricket apex body passed this proposal with the consent of the councilors at their Annual General Meeting (AGM) today at a local hotel in the city.

It meant all the 76 clubs of Dhaka including Dhaka Premier League (DPL), first division, second division and third division can exercise their vote in next elections.

The proposal was passed after amending the BCB constitution. Earlier, according to the last amendment of the constitution in 2013, 58 councilors from the 76 clubs can exercise their voting rights with 18 councilors from 12 clubs of DPL, 20 councilors from the 20 clubs of first division, 12 from 24 clubs of second division and eight from 20 clubs of third division.

Now after the fresh amendment of the constitution, which got unanimous consent, all clubs got equal rights.

“Some clubs did not have councillorship in the Premier League. Some had more than one. Dhaka Premier League Super League clubs had two each. However it was passed in the AGM today that we will give equal number of councillorships to each club,” BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papin said here today after the AGM.

Prior to the 2013 election, constitutional amendments allowed the nomination of two councilors for each of the six Dhaka Premier League (DPL) Super League clubs. The last three BCB elections were held under this constitution. The amendment to this clause was brought in the BCB Annual General Meeting today.

When asked about the two councillorships system of the DPL Super League clubs, which many believed that gave them an unfair advantage, the BCB boss said, “I have been involved in cricket for many years. I was involved in Abahani Club earlier. Since then I have seen two clubs in the Premier League – Abahani and Mohammedan. There were many clubs, but only Abahani Mohammedan fought for the championship. We wanted to make the league competitive so that other clubs also can fight for championship title.”

“Our main demand was for more clubs to fight for the championship, to build teams. Therefore it (two votes) was given as an incentive. But now not only Abahani Mohammedan, many clubs fight for this championship fights and form a formidable team. Anyone can be a champion anytime. Now many clubs are forming strong teams and consistently doing well, and so the two councillorships system lost its importance.”

He went on to saying: “Our purpose was served. It has increased the competition of the clubs, along with the remuneration of the cricketers. The proposal (two votes) proved to be successful. But other clubs who didn’t get a chance, now all clubs will get a chance. Therefore councillorship has been given to all the clubs.

The BCB president disclosed that the councilors welcomed this decision of the board.

‘Now Bangladesh cricket has come to such a place that if the clubs are given one councillorship each, no one should have any anger. Rather, everyone should be happy. Everyone who was there welcomed it and was happy,” he revealed.
