Sylhet truckers to go on strike from Oct 31

The truck, pickup van and covered van drivers and their helpers in Sylhet region will start a 48-hour strike from October 31 demanding that stone extraction from quarries be resumed.

Golam Hadi Soyful, convener of Sylhet divisional unit of Truck-Pick-up-Covered Van Owners Oikkya Parishad and President of Sylhet District Truck-Pick-up-Covered van Owners Association, announced the strike at a press conference in Sylhet on Monday.

According to the, about 15 lakh people are involved in the stone trade in Sylhet and they are now having a hard time due to the closure of the quarries for almost 5 years.

Depending on the situation, the transport workers will go on an indefinite strike, the transport leaders warned.

Earlier, the government suspended the work of stone extraction from stone quarries to save the environment.
