The teacher who cut the hair of the students was expelled, the university was declared closed

Farhana Yasmin Baten, a teacher in the Department of Cultural Heritage and Bangladesh Studies, has been suspended for cutting off the hair of 14 students of Rabindra University in Sirajganj.

At the same time, it has been directed to suspend the academic and administrative activities of the university indefinitely till further instructions. Besides, all the tests have also been postponed. However, it has been decided that the investigation activities will continue.

These decisions were taken at the 16th syndicate meeting of the university held at 8 pm on Thursday.

Laila Ferdous Himel, chairman of the university’s Rabindra Studies department and head of the five-member investigation committee, and Abdul Latif, additional acting treasurer of the university’s VC, confirmed the information.

Acting Vice Chancellor of the University Abdul Latif presided over the syndicate meeting was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Dhaka, Professor Abu Md. Delwar Hossain, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Education-3 Syeda Nawara Jahan and Rabindra University Registrar Md. Sohrab Ali. A press release signed by the registrar also mentioned that the members present at the time expressed their sorrow.

Regarding the next decision against the teacher, it has been said that subject to the report received by the investigation committee formed by the university, the final decision will be taken against the temporarily expelled teacher Farhana Yasmin Baten in accordance with the laws, statutes, regulations, policies and government employees (discipline and appeal) rules 2018.

It is learned that last Sunday (September 26) at noon, there was a final examination in the first year political science subject of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Bangladesh Studies at Rabindra University. Upon entering the examination hall, Farhana Yasmin Baten, chairman and assistant proctor of the department, was already standing in front of the examination hall door with scissors in her hand.

When students enter the hall, those whose hair is caught in the palm of their hand cut off the front part of their head. In this way, she cut the hair of 14 students one by one. She then abused the students. They are emotionally broken.

The issue went viral when students posted on Facebook in protest of the incident. Later the students started a hunger strike.

According to the decision of the board of directors of Rabindra University, the teacher resigned in writing from the post of chairman, assistant proctor and member of the proctorial board of the department of cultural heritage and Bangladesh studies. However, the students continued their movement as they were not permanently removed from their jobs or resigned.
