Shakib’s Barishal into BPL 2022 final

Fortune Barishal have secured Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)’s Final spot after beating Comilla Victorians in the first qualifier of the tournament as Barishal beat Comilla by 10 runs in Mirpur Monday.

Young bowlers Mehedi Hasan Rana 2/15 and Shofiqul Islam 2/16 helped the side to seal the victory.

Batting first Fortune Barishal post 143/8 in 20 overs. In reply, Cumilla Victorians able to score 133/7 in 20 overs.

Chasing the target, Cumilla post 62 off 64 balls for the opening stand. After losing the wicket of young Mahmudul Hasan Joy (20 off 30).

Cumilla reduced to 68/3 as skipper Imrul Kayes (5 off 5) and Litton Das (38 off 35) fall in quick succession. Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali put 36 runs for the fourth wickets stand before Moeen Ali got bowled by Bravo for 22 off 15. Faf du Plessis and Narine added 20 runs for the fifth wickets stand. When Faf du Plessis got out scoring 21 off 15 Cumilla needed 20 runs from 9 balls. Mehedi Hasan Rana gave only 4 runs in the 19th over and took the wicket of du Plessis.

Cumilla needed 18 runs in the final over but they able to post only 7 runs for 2 wickets which let them lose the match by 10 runs.

For Fortune Barishal, Mehedi Hasan Rana, Shofiqul Islam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman bagged 2 wickets each while DJ Bravo took one wicket.

Earlier, Cumilla Victorians won the toss and asked Fortune Barishal to bat first at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Cumilla bowlers restricted Fortune Barishal to 143/8.

Chris Gayle and Munim Shahriar gave a flying start to the side adding 58 runs off 38 balls before Gayle dismiss for 22 off 19 to Shohidul Islam.

Munim Shahriar and Najmul Hossain Shanto put 22 runs for the second wickets stand before Munim was dismissed scoring team’s highest 44 off 30. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan got run out for 1 off 2.

Ziaur Rahman’s 17 off 12 and Dwayne Bravo’s 17 off 21 helped Fortune Barishal to past 140.

For Cumilla Victorians, Pacer Shohidul Islam bagged 3 for 25, Moeen Ali took 2 for 23 while Sunil Narine and Tanvir Islam picked one wicket each.
